As a spiritual exercise, take yourself into a larger room. For example, if you have a desire for self-discipline, leave the room of self-discipline that you’re in. Go down the corridor, and go into another room. This room will be larger. It will be much larger. Just live within the awareness that you want to be in this room of more self-discipline. Then let the Holy Spirit, the ECK, bring about the changes in your life that will accompany such a resolution.

Sri Harold Klemp – Truth Has No Secrets

This is a really neat spiritual exercise if you are lacking discipline in any area of your life. This is a technique you can use, regardless of religious background. This is a quote from the daily inspiration page of the ECKANKAR website. Here’s the link if you’d like to get access to these daily quotes. I visit each day: https://www.eckankar.org/engage/daily-inspiration/

I use this technique for a multitude of things. Things like focus, discipline, or even open-mindedness. If you try this and it works, stick with it. You can create anything you like for yourself. We all have this ability. It is not dependent on intelligence, wealth, good looks, or any of that. You simply close your eyes and visualize a better life for yourself. Once you do this for a bit, you’ll start getting ideas or epiphanies that will guide you.

I hope all of you have a terrific Sunday.

May the blessings be.

Daily Ramblings – Wisdom Wednesday – Using Your Imagination

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.” – Albert Einstein

Did you know that most of Einstein’s Theories were thought experiments? A thought experiment is using one’s imagination to conduct an experiment. Can you imagine that? (no pun intended). I often picture Einstein sitting at his desk with pipe smoldering, eyes closed, and thinking up the theory of relativity or gravity bending light? What a mind!

Another topic this quote brings up for me is the act of visualization. Do you realize that a good portion of our Olympic athletes and professional sports players visualize exactly what they will do before they do it? I remember a Winter Olympics a few years back and watching a member of the U.S. Ski team visualizing her entire run in her mind before she did it.

Visualization is a powerful tool for any of us. You can use visualization to replay a scene in your mind you would like to fix. The late Dr. Stephen Covey, in his book “The 7 habits of Highly Effective People”, describes how he helped his son perform better in football by visualizing passing the ball perfectly. He also worked with his son on a tactic that would help him drop a bad play that just occurred by snapping his wrist band. Imagine how powerful that is. Dr. Covey calls this process, “…rewriting the script.” He was referring to the scripts we have playing in our mind. Another name for these scripts is a neural pathway. You see your brain is so efficient at conserving energy it automates everything. It automates your thoughts, your feelings in certain situations, how to open a door, how to drive a car, and how to use a knife, spoon, and fork.

We can use the power of visualization ourselves. We can envision something we want and visualize how that future scene will look like, smell, feel, and sound. In fact, the more senses you can imagine in this desired scene, the more powerful it is. Another aspect of the brain is that it doesn’t know the difference between these visualizations and reality. Do you doubt that? Imagine biting into a lemon and see how much you salivate. It works.

I am a fledgling author. I visualize myself at a book signing. A simple visualization with a stack of books on either side of me. I can feel the pencil. I can smell the newness of my books. I can taste the coffee I have next to me that I bought at the Barnes & Noble cafe in another part of the store. I see the smiles of the people that are in line and exchange pleasantries with the people marveling at my book and wanting to shake hands with the author D.L. Gardner (this will be my pen name). This is all it takes. Visualize your most important goal every day and your mind will work night and day to help you achieve that goal. Why does your mind do this you ask? It is called cognitive dissonance. When your mind sees a difference between what you have now and what you want or visualize, it begins working on strategies and action steps you can take to eliminate this dissonance. This dissonance occurs when your brain recognizes differences in the present with the visualization you give it of the future. Your brain sees this visualization as “real”. Subsequently, it will do all it can to alleviate the stress that this dissonance causes.

You can use your imagination to create anything you want. I have a few fiction authors who I interact with. How do you think they create meaningful prose for their readership? You guessed it—they create their worlds, the scenes, the scenarios, their characters, and the dialogue with their imagination. For some of you this may be a HUGE no-brainer. Think about the imagination of the greats like Disney, Faulkner, King, and Tolkien. Imagine creating the worlds they have created. It is possible.

Your imagination is a powerful tool for creating poetry, books, new devices, and programs. It can create a new business that serve untold thousands. It is all available to each of us. We only have to use it and let it run free. Then, it takes the courage to pursue these creations despite our self-doubt, the naysayers, and all of those boogie men we create in our mind to defeat ourselves.

When I am deeply involved with a visualization or use my imagination, I feel like a kid sometimes. I feel like I can do anything I want. It really is a wonderful thing to imagine and visualize the future you want for you and your family. It is one of those human powers that allowed us to utilize fire, build the steam engine, and exploit the electron.

Try this out with something you want to do. What have you got to lose?

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Spiritual Saturday – Acting As If

“A person who has a high degree of spiritual unfoldment will be balanced in his everyday life. He will use common sense and common courtesy with the people around him.”—Harold Klemp The Language of Soul

What is spiritual unfoldment? The easiest way to explain it is to use the analogy of a map. Initially, we start with a folded-up map. We see some map but miss the details that are in it. As we unfold the map, we see more of the surrounding territory and have a better view of how to move to the places we want to go. The more unfoldment we gain, the higher and more detailed our map becomes. When our internal map improves it gets us closer to the true terrain. This truth, once we recognize it, helps us live our lives better.

I find the topics of psychology and cognition fascinating. Over the years I have discovered that each of us use our own map to negotiate life. Some parts of the map are like other people’s maps. Some parts are not. These maps are unique to us. As we move through life, our maps change to adapt. I recently learned about filters. These filters do three things. They distort, generalize, and delete. These filters are necessary because they help us interact. Imagine having to relearn common, everyday tasks like walking to the mailbox, going out to eat, and anything else you can think of. This automatic filtering saves time and energy.

The downside to these internal filters is what they do with inputs we receive through the senses. Let’s say you have a bad boss and you are traumatized by your interactions with him or her. The part of your filter that generalizes could generalize that all bosses are bad. This causes us to “expect” to have bad bosses. If this auto filtering becomes strong enough in our internal wiring, you will delete or distort anything that differs with your belief that all bosses are bad.

Our beliefs are powerful. They are hard to circumvent or change because of the internal map we possess and the filters we used to analyze new information. We can change, however. We can short-circuit this cybernetic loop by changing our behavior or our beliefs. The beliefs we should target are called “limiting beliefs”. Limiting beliefs are those beliefs that cause us to doubt something or make it appear unsafe. Beliefs like “no one will love me”, “I’m horrible with money”, or “I can’t find a job” are all examples. How do you change these limited beliefs? One way is to behave differently. Act as if. Acting as if is like making pretend. We pretend we can do something we think we can’t. Since the mind can’t tell the difference between what it perceives and what it imagines, it can be fooled into believing that it can do something it couldn’t do before. This is quite a revelation, right?

I’ll leave you with this thought. You can change whatever you want if you can act your way into believing it. Once you believe something, your auto filtering system will do the rest.

Have a great Saturday!

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Bonus Content – Self-imposed Rules

16 Friday Nov 2018

change, Re-writing our rules, Self-imposed Rules, Shannon L. Alder, Visualization

“When you think this pain is all you deserve, you are right. You are the only one that can decide how long you will walk in hell.” – Shannon L. Alder

From time-to-time, I am prompted to write something. Today, I was prompted to write about self-imposed rules. Think about your life as it is. Are you living your life or someone else’s?

Are you in the job you want because you wanted it or because you felt that society expects you to do that work? Are you buying things because you really want them or are you making purchases mindlessly because it’s what will make you the “cool kid on the block”? Are you afraid to be yourself because of outside expectations of who you should be, what you should be, or how you should act? Are you failing to act because you are so afraid of failing that you do nothing instead? Do you automatically assume you cannot do something before you even start? These are all self-imposed rules.

We all impose rules on ourselves. We tell ourselves what we can do and what we can’t do. We tell ourselves we are good at this or bad at that. We tell ourselves we should wear this or wear that. If we violate these rules, we become uncomfortable. Something inside us says, “Whoa, what are you doing wearing that color?”

I’m currently reading a book called, “How to Be an Imperfectionist”, by Stephen Guise and it discusses a great many of these self-imposed rules. Some of us have so many self-imposed rules we are actually paralyzed. Rules that tells us:

“You can’t do that.”

“You aren’t strong enough to do that.”

“You aren’t smart enough to do that.”

“What if she says no?”

“What if I fail?”

These questions are derived from our personal set of self-imposed rules. Much of what we do is not derived from what we really want. Much of it is derived from what everyone else wants.

A few years ago, I found myself in a really dark place. A place where I envisioned myself walking off of a cliff—a place where I felt something chasing me, all the time. A place where I could feel a web of knots wrapping themselves around me, providing me a situation where I had fewer and fewer options.

The only option I had was to change. I had to change the way I was thinking. I had to change the way I was looking at the world. It is at these dark times that change really becomes our only option.

What happened to me was truly revolutionary. I realized that all of my self-imposed rules guaranteed my failure. They guaranteed my results. They guaranteed my misery.

I’d like you to picture something in your mind. Picture a new you without constraints, without limits, without any potential to fail. Picture yourself totally content with what you have—totally grateful for everything in your life. Picture yourself doing something you could only dream about before, not with any strings attached like “I want this or that because of this effort” but doing this thing for the very act of doing it. Doing something you know will benefit you whether you are a master at it or remain a neophyte forever. Liberating isn’t it?

If you can’t visualize this, practice it for a bit. Read some books for inspiration about what type of life you would like to live without any ability to fail. Just act “AS IF” anything you wanted was yours, act “AS IF” you had already arrived. Act “AS IF” anything you wanted to do, you could do.

Many will balk at this type of thinking, assuming it is just total BS, “pie in the sky” thinking. I get that. This is where self-imposed rules become detrimental. If you think something is the way it is—IT IS. Just try and visualize doing something you’ve always wanted to do but didn’t because of a self-imposed rule.

I do this exercise each time I am writing out my goals. Guess what? These goals change all of the time, particularly when you begin checking your older goals off of your list. Write down 100 things you would do right now without thinking of failure. Just write down all of the things you’d like to do before you die—Your bucket list. Once you’ve written down all of the things you’d like to do. Start working toward one of them.

Think about what it would take to cross the finish line. Then, start writing down all of the discreet action steps you would need to take to get there. Then, one by one, work on these action steps. If you find yourself resisting one of these steps it means it is still too big. Take that action step and minimize it even more. Then, get right back at it again tomorrow.

Get rid of any rules that limit you. Get rid of any constricting rules or influences that are imposing their will on you. Just begin executing and acting on your list. Start small. Take one step each day. You’ll get there—promise.

The rules we impose on ourselves are just that—rules we create. We can uncreate them. We can write new rules. If you’re stuck, if you’re afraid, if you’re in a place that allows you less and less freedom to act, the only way out is to change the way you are thinking and re-write the rules that have created the prison you built. Just, re-write the rules.

Until next time…

It always seems impossible until it's done. - Nelson Mandela

Is there a task or goal you have that you are procrastinating on? You know you want to do it but you’re stuck. In the meantime, it keeps eating at you day after day. What do you do?

Like Nelson Mandela explains above, these tasks are not as big as we build up in our minds. The best way to handle a new task or undertaking is to learn how others have done it. Look for a tutorial on YouTube, post a question on Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, or Twitter. Ask your friends, your family members, your colleagues at work or church. It is highly likely that someone in your circle will know someone that can help or at least point you in the right direction.

I take a lot of online courses. I do this with a specific goal in mind. First, to learn something new. Second, to learn about something I want to know about that will help me achieve what I want. Recently, I took a non-fiction book writing course. It was terrific! It gave me a framework to work with. It provided key steps to take to write the book–the most important part being the creation of an outline. I discovered that once the brainstorming for things I wanted to talk about took shape, the writing of the book is actually pretty easy.

During this time I also had an epiphany. I took a look at my blog. In the last two years, I have easily written a book or two in content. So, I use my blog as the model. I write each section of my book and treat it like a daily blog post. Now, it’s a simple undertaking. Yeah, there are other unknowns out there like: How will I publish the book? Who will I get to edit the book? and other future questions, but the key, for now, is to get the content on paper. That’s what I’m focusing on now–content.

If you have any bucket list items, goals, or aspirations–don’t hesitate to begin searching for someone who has already done it. You’d be surprised. There are a lot of people in the world. There are a lot of people who post their achievements on YouTube and many other places. You’ll find out exactly what you need to find out.

The key to all of this is to act. You can talk about something, you can think about something, you can dream about something. If this is all you do, you’ll never get this thing done and you’ll be talking about it 6 months from now. Get off your butt and do something. You’ll be amazed how much you can get done if you just chop away a little a day.

This week is week 2 of the Kris Gethin 4-week to shred workout routine. I’m up to 40 minutes of cardio two times a day, along with a heavy-duty workout routine. I’m feeling pretty good and it feels even better when I’ve checked that second workout off of my daily to-do list.

I’m also reading some books, writing here and working on my book, and pursuing my spiritual interests. It’s going to be a great week!

Nothing is impossible folks. You just have to take a breath, visualize, come up with a plan, organize the action steps, set a basic timeline, and get to work. It’s that simple. I wish all of you a great week!

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Daily Quote – Execution and Personal Hacks

Today’s Quote

“It’s not about ideas. It’s about making ideas happen.” – Scott Belsky

Ideas are always needed to create something new or improve some aspect of our life and work processes, but without the actions that are necessary to bring those ideas into reality, the effort of creating an idea in the first place is wasted. We need to visualize what we want, come up with a plan to achieve what we want, then execute that plan.

So simple, but so hard for some folks. I’m one of them. I overthink, procrastinate, you name it. To overcome these self-imposed obstacles, I come up with “hacks” that work for me. Exercise is one of the things I have created a hack for. I know myself. If I do not workout first thing in the morning I will not workout. That’s just me. There are many who have no problem with going to the gym at the end of the day or during lunch. Not me. If I don’t get up and go to the gym first thing, it won’t happen that day.

So, I schedule my exercise everyday in the morning. This is what that looks like:

8 am Rise

8:15 – 9:00 am Morning Ritual (Pre-workout drink, weigh in, make bed, get dressed, and head to gym)

This routine works for me. It may not for you, but you’ll have to figure out hacks to overcome your weaknesses. The key is to come up with a way for you to overcome self-imposed obstacles. Whatever they are, figure out a way to get over them, under them, or around them. If one hack doesn’t work, come up with another and another until you find a solution. Then it’s nothing but executing daily to knock out your plan and achieve your visualized goal.

Until next time…

Creating a Plan, Dr. Stephen Covey, Executing the Plan, Setting Goals, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Tony Robbins, Visualization

Today’s Quote:

“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into visible.” – Tony Robbins

Dr. Stephen Covey discusses this concept in his book: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He mentions that when we create something it goes through two separate processes. The first is the mental creation—that which we visualize in our minds. This could be a project completed, a new car we want, a mate we are interested in, or maybe a trip somewhere. To bring this mental creation into reality, as Tony Robbins suggests, we must then set goals, develop a plan to achieve those goals, and then execute the plan.

I’m currently working on a book. Right now, I am focused on completing the rough draft. I wrote out the chapter headings and literally writing each chapter as I go to get all the content I want in my book segregated and organized. I have until October. I measure myself daily against my goals and the daily step I take is writing 500 words. Once I hit the 500 words I’m done. Slowly but surely, I’ll finish the rough draft. Then I’ll set myself another goal to get this thing to a final draft and get it off to various publishers.

This is how you bring the invisible into the visible. Visualize, plan, execute. It’s just that simple.

See you tomorrow…

Today’s Quote

“The most effective way to do it, is to do it.” – Amelia Earhart

So many people have dreams. They dream about a great body, a robust bank account, a nice home, and a perfect mate. They dream about being a success.

Why do so many people fail?

The key to pursuing your goals and dreams is simply to just go do it. Sometimes we have to rethink our goals and dreams. When you review what you want, sometimes we discover that some of our goals and dreams really aren’t our goals and dreams, but the goals and dreams of others.

When you really know what you want, start with baby steps. Do something/anything to get moving towards your goals. Once you start establishing these actions as habits, the dream will be achieved–it is merely a matter of time. Be patient and keep chipping away. You’ll get there.

Simple process for achieving what you want:

  1. Visualize what you want, feeling how it will be to have what you are aspiring to.
  2. Put together a plan.
  3. Start small and monitor your progress.

I hope each of you is having a terrific Tuesday!

See you tomorrow…

“Be great in act, as you have been in thought.” – Jean Paul

In this posting, I want to discuss visualization. Visualization is a really handy tool to solve problems, create something new, or simply to contemplate new ideas. I realize that many people cannot visualize. Hopefully the steps I provide below will help you build your ability to visualize. Once you know how to make visualization a part of your life there are all kinds of benefits you can use to improve it.

We all possess the ability to visualize what we want. When we create something, we always visualize it in our minds first, even if it is a subconscious process. Steven Covey (author of the 7 habits) discusses this as the first and second creations. At first, we “see” in our minds what we need and how it is put together. Then we build from our visualized blueprint. This occurs whether we are creating a plan of action, writing a blog post or book, giving a speech, or building a machine, a home, or a piece of art.

Visualization is not hard, but if you have never consciously done it, it can be a little daunting. Like any skill, it takes practice to build from where you are currently. Here are a few ways for you to improve your ability to visualize.

Steps to build visualization into your life:

  • Step 1: Imagine you are sitting in the sand on a beach. As you sit there, visualize the blue-green water and your feet in the white sand. The picture is the first step in visualizing. Keep the picture simple. Only visualize your feet in the sand and the picture of the ocean in front of you.
  • Step 2: Add sound. Now hear the ocean surf washing up on the shore 20 feet in front of where you are sitting. Only add the visual and the sound.
  • Step 3: Add feeling. How does the sand feel? How does the breeze feel coming off of the ocean? How does the sun feel beaming down on you? Only add the visual, sound, and feeling.
  • Step 4: Add taste. Visualize drinking from a water bottle. Feel the condensation and temperature of the bottle. Feel the gritty sand under your feet. Feel the sun on your legs. Taste the crisp water coming out of your water bottle. Only add the visual, sound, feeling, and taste.
  • Step 5: Add more complexity. Add Seagulls to your picture. Add a porpoise diving out of the water. Add a person (man or female) running down the beach in the distance with their dog.
  • Step 6: Ad infinitum. Add whatever you wish to your visualization. When you come back to the present, write down any notes on your experience when you’re completed. Typically I try to visualize things daily for about 5-10 minutes as part of my meditation practice. Revisit this place when you are stressed out or just want a respite from the day.

This is a simple exercise that you can practice every day. Once you’ve mastered this scene. You can make your own scenes and practice on adding complexity to them. The really interesting part of this exercise is when you begin adding complexity unconsciously and your creation takes off on its own (this takes a lot of practice).

Here are some prompts for other visualizations you can do:

Visualize a trip you would like to take. What sounds do you hear? What do you feel internally and externally? What unique smells do you encounter? (If you are having difficulty, go online and search for images of the place you want to go. This helps a lot when you are first starting out)

Visualize your body in good shape. What do you look like? How does your body feel?

Visualize a place you can go to relax and reduce stress? What does your safe place look like? Is it a garden? Is it a monastery to meditate in? Is it a mountain top allowing you to hear the wind and take in a breath-taking panorama?

As you can see, your creativity will allow you to go anywhere and do anything. It’s how we take the basics of visualization to create what we want and really experience it. You have unlimited freedom in your inner worlds and all of it will be uniquely tailored to you. I hope you have a good time doing this and enjoy yourself.

If you try these techniques and something works for you, reply to this posting. I’d love to hear about your inner adventures.

Until next time…
