This week, folks, it’s cardio, cardio, cardio. I’ve been feeling a little winded during my weight routines and going to tackle getting my cardio fitness built back up. This week, I’m going to do solid cardio for the entire week.

Mon-Saturday: Cardio 30 minutes (Treadmill)

My Mom got home from her trip in Texas last night, so I now have the freedom to hit the gym, since she’ll be home to take care of Dad while I’m gone. I’ll be hitting the weights and cardio daily.

Here’s my workout schedule:

  • Monday – Full Body Weights
  • Tuesday – Cardio
  • Wednesday – Full Body Weights
  • Thursday – Cardio
  • Friday – Full Body Weights
  • Saturday – Cardio
  • Sunday – Cardio

  • Full-body workout and 15 minutes of Cardio (Monday – Sunday)
  • I’ll be hitting my local Planet Fitness this week.

 

I’m also meeting with my chiropractor this week. I highly recommend this practice. I visit her monthly just to keep everything in tip-top shape.

I just got an Apple Watch. Wow! What a great tool this is. Now I can track my heart rate, my steps, and a whole host of activities that I couldn’t before. That being said, my workouts have grown in intensity and consistency since getting this thing for my birthday.

Ok. Here is my workout routine for the week!

Monday – Sunday

Full-Body Workout Exercise Bands will be used to hit 5 strength workouts throughout the day and 1 cardio workout at the gym

  • Exercise routine 1 – Squats, Glute lifts, and Calf Presses 3 sets of 20
  • Exercise routine 2 – Stair pushups, Triceps Extensions 3 sets of 20
  • Exercise routine 3 – Ab crunches, Oblique crunches, Flutter kicks 3 sets of 20
  • Exercise routine 4 – Bent over rows, Bicep Curls 3 sets of 20
  • Exercise routine 5 – Shoulder presses, Front raises, Lateral raises, Shrugs 3 sets of 20
  • Cardio 20 minutes at the gym on a tread mill

I have found these little routines spread through the day should be a great way to keep my metabolism cranked. Since I am doing these every day, I am not working to failure on any sets, just knocking out sets until I get a good burn in the muscle groups I am working.

Yesterday’s workout was HIIT cardio. I like to vary the equipment I use and yesterday it was the elliptical.

Yesterday’s Workout:

  • Planet Fitness, Elliptical Machine, Interval Program, 20 minutes.

As most of you know, I fell off the exercise wagon this last few weeks. We had family come in from out of town, and all the other excuses that come to mind. Each of us has little tricks or hacks to get something done. For me, it is just going to the gym. If I can get myself into the parking lot, I’m going to workout. The workout itself is enjoyable, it’s the getting there that stops me from consistently working out from time-to-time.

PM:

  • 25 minutes Cardio Treadmill Random Program

Today I wanted to address our limitations in the gym. Each of our bodies is unique. My particular “uniqueness” involves the effects of a lower-back surgery I got in 2003. This surgery helped me decide to retire from the Army in 2005 and resulted in nerve damage to my left sciatic nerve. Occasionally I’ll suffer from numbness in the left leg and a tingling sensation in my left foot. This is what they call neuropathy. I could take medication for it, but prefer to just grin and deal with it. Because of this unique condition I have to avoid certain exercises like deadlifts, squats, and lunges. I don’t have the balance in my left leg and although I can still do deadlifts and squats, I prefer not to. Each time I have incorporated one of these two exercises in my routine I hurt my back. It’s not fun to hurt your back. So, I do other exercises that are easier on my back and still get a decent workout in.

It is really crucial to take care of yourself in the gym. Weight lifting is no joke. I read somewhere that you should check your ego at the door. This is solid advice. I see so many young people lifting weights that are way too heavy for them. The form they use is horrific and they are just asking for a major injury. Ah, youth.

Today was a light day on my workout program. They are intermittent. The goal of this program is to hit cardio every other day. Subsequently, some of my cardio routines will coincide with a weight lifting routine and on other days, like today, it’ll be cardio all by itself.

  • Dumbbell rows 3 x 10 (both sides);
  • Lat Pull Downs 3 x 10;

  • Barbell Curls 3 x 10;
  • 25 minutes Cardio Treadmill, Hill Program

It felt good to get back into the gym. I went in the evening, which is not a customary practice for me. I went this evening because of a book discussion class I run at our local library on the 2nd Monday of the month. I needed to prepare and ate up most of my day getting ready for it. Ah, the beauty of 24-hour gyms.

The next time you are experiencing insomnia, go to the gym. It is awesome heading to the gym at 3 am and knocking out your workout. I use the showers at the gym so I hit the showers and by the time I get home, I’m ready to go back to bed and sleep. The gym is my therapy. I leave all my stressors, cares, and fears on the gym floor.

 

Anyway. I hope each of you had a terrific Mother’s Day. It was just Mom, Dad, and I. My brother is in Arizona and my sister is too far away in the state to come down. I’m looking forward to a productive week!

  • 30-minutes Cardio, Treadmill, Hill Program

It was great getting back into the gym this morning. I really enjoy new cardio equipment. The Planet Fitness I use replaced every piece of their cardio gear.

 

Static cardio vs. HIIT

There are a lot of advocates for HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), claiming you can lose more weight for less effort and all the rest. I enjoy static cardio. It gets the heartbeat up; you get a good sweat going; and it is relaxing. Either will work, but for me, particularly with the nerve damage in my left leg, static cardio is a much better option.

  • Alternate Dumbbell Curls 3 x 10;
  • Barbell Curls 3 x 10;
  • 30-minute Cardio, Treadmill, Hill Program

It was good to get into the gym after yesterday’s day off. I normally only take Friday off, but we had a religious seminar yesterday we attended that lasted all day. I was bushed when we got back home.
