Daily Ramblings – Motivation Monday – Rigid, Flexible, and Hybrid Scheduling

Daily Tasks, Flexible, Hybrid, motivation, Rigid, Schedule, Scheduling, Self-Awareness, To-do Lists

Well, it’s about 1:45 am and I am getting this post done early as I’ve changed my schedule to take advantage of the peace and quiet. One of my fellow bloggers mentioned she could do the same as I do, but has an “early bird” husband, so she has to keep a different schedule. I get that. I’m lucky to be retired as young as I did, and have a little more freedom than most.

What is the topic for today? Schedules. Some folks are very rigid in their schedule, while others are more flexible. I tend to be on the flexible side. I list out my tasks daily (recurring on Google Calendar) and knock them out. Sometimes, I do my writing early in the morning like today. Other times, I don’t begin my work until I get up around 2 or 3 pm (sometimes earlier). It literally depends on how well I sleep or what’s going on. As most of you know I retired early to help out my folks. My Dad suffers from Dementia, and needs someone around him all the time. If my Mom has an errand to run, I need to get up. Sometimes, earlier than I like, but it must be done. So, I get up, get some coffee, and hang out with Dad while he sleeps in his chair (most of the time). When Mom gets back, I take a nap. Subsequently, my flexible schedule of doing things everyday is just that–flexible. I get all of my stuff done, but not at a specific time each day.

I’m not locked into any type of writing schedule, learning schedule, or exercise schedule. I do my daily meditation at a fixed time (5 PM daily), but that is flexible too, particularly if something comes up, like an appointment, going out to dinner, or what have you. I do, however, get all of the things I have slotted for the day completed.

You may not be wired that way. Some of my writing friends, for example, have to write at a given time each day for a set amount of time. It’s their process. I have no problem with the rigid schedule or my flex schedule. The key to this is to identify if you are rigid, flexible, or a hybrid. Hybrids will be flexible sometimes, and rigid at other times. Once you identify which one of these categories you are most aligned with, you can plan out your days, tasks, and schedules as you see fit. For those hybrids out there, you may have periods of a few weeks or months where you have to have a rigid schedule, and then get the nudge to be more flexible. Self awareness is the trick here.

So pay attention to what’s going on internally. What is easiest to achieve? Are you resisting your schedule and missing start and end times, or are you missing some of your tasks because your schedule is too loose? Only you know the answer to those questions. Either way, follow your gut. You’re in charge of your schedule outside of work. What works? When you find that–stick to it. You’ll get more done, and you won’t feel hemmed in by your calendar and to-do list. Who wouldn’t be motivated by a schedule that aligns with the way they are?

Well, folks, have a great Monday!

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Update – Sister Visit

Hi folks!

For those of you who follow my blog consistently, you’ll notice I missed yesterday’s posting and today’s is not a video from Ted Talks or TedEd. My sister is visiting. When she comes my schedule goes out the window, to accommodate her and her visit. We always have a great time when she comes over. So this is what I wanted to pass along.

Her schedule is pretty open, so I don’t know if she’ll be staying much longer or hitting the road today. Either way, my schedule of postings will be interrupted for a bit, while she’s here, so I can maximize my time with her. She lives a few hours away, and we talk over the phone and stuff, but it’s not the same as her being here. For those of you with family scattered all over, you know what I’m talking about. I always maximize my time with my sister and brother when they visit, because it isn’t often.

Right now, her and Dad are downstairs watching Star Trek on Amazon. Dad loves television shows and movies, and she and dad always get in one day of watching shows when she visits. It’s their time, and I squeak away to get some of my things done when she does this with dad. Dad has been deteriorating lately. He doesn’t eat as much, sleeps most of his day away, and that’s just what happens when people get close to passing. It’s like God prepares them for the next step on their journey by keeping them in the dream worlds more and more as they approach the end.

I realize this may sound a little melodramatic, but I noticed this type of behavior in our dog Goldie when she was getting close to passing. The elderly just sleep. When the passing time comes, we call it translation in Eckankar; the individual is well-prepared for it. This is what I see with Dad. So when Deb comes over, I let her maximize her time with Dad. I am with him every day, and I don’t need the time she doesn’t get while she is away.

Well, that’s it for today, folks. I hope you all are having a great Tuesday!

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Thankful Thursdays – Grateful for Time

Is it Thursday already? Time sure flies when you are focused on the things you consider important and focus on those things you do each day, one at a time. Earlier in the year, I realized I was becoming very efficient at knocking out my daily rituals. So efficient, that I found myself becoming bored. I hate being bored. When I am bored, time slows to a trickle. This is how I know I my new schedule is working. Time flies because I am focused on various tasks throughout the day and week and they occupy, entertain, and fulfill me.

Are you bored? If so, add some things to your schedule. Read more, write more, learn more. If you are stressed out and resisting your daily to-do list, do the opposite. Trim back to your core tasks–the things you consider most important.

Most of you in my audience still work. This encompasses most of your day. For those of us that are retired, I think the biggest challenge is staying busy. Not busy, busy, but busy. Any of us could binge watch Netflix or sit like zombies in front of our laptops watching hundreds of funny animal videos, but is there any challenge to this? Is there any purpose behind this, besides doing something to pass the time. To me, that would be a total waste of my life.

When I am engaged in writing, reading, coding, learning, or exercising, I focus in on that task and that task only. When I am meditating, there is nothing else to concern myself with. If you are working full time and trying to add something to your day, the one thing I would recommend before retiring is a hobby. Your hobby could be computer programming, photography, writing books or poetry, starting a blog, anything.

Most folks dream of a time when they can just golf, travel, or stick with one thing. In my experience, you need many things. Personally, I am pursuing all the things I wanted to when I was too busy. When I was working, about the only thing I had time for was exercise. I’m glad I did, but there is so much more available now that I’m retired.

I’m grateful for the time I have. It allows me to do so many things during the day. The things I consider important. When I feel I’ve packed too much in my day, I trim it back. When I find myself finishing my work too quickly I adjust. This week is perfect. I am getting all the things I need to get done, and have some time left over for frivolous things like Netflix and other things I enjoy for leisure time.

Have a great Thursday, folks!

Until next time…

I hope all of you are safe. This week will continue to use my home for my workouts using exercise bands. I hope all of you are doing something for yourself physically. I know it’s tough if you don’t have a home gym or are not used to working out in your home, but you can get a good workout in, if you put a little thought into it. Using your stairs, chairs, and other items can provide a great workout.

Here are my workouts for the week!

  • Tuesday – Lower Body
  • Wednesday – Upper Body
  • Thursday – Lower Body
  • Friday – Upper Body
  • Saturday – Lower Body
