“The secret of your success is determined by your daily agenda.” – John C. Maxwell

Quote credit: Brainyquote

What do you do every day? What do you really do?

I went through a Dale Carnegie course on leadership about a decade ago. During one of our initial sessions, we were given a few sheets of paper with “:30” on every other line. We were instructed to fill out these sheets for 5 days, tracking what we did every 30 minutes. This is an eye-opening exercise.

When each of us returned to the class, we had to brief the group on our sheets. Almost every person who stood up to brief explained it took at least two days just to get in the habit of tracking their time accurately. It was the same for me. After I began tracking my time I was shocked at what I discovered. I was not working as hard as I thought I was. I was unfocused most of the day, flipping from doing actual work to non-work items almost every 30 minutes. This exercise motivated me to begin looking at not only how I spent my time, but what I wanted to focus on.

Success is different for all of us. We all define it differently. I think some people’s problem with success is that they are having their ideas of success defined for them. Success to me is being healthy, happy, setting, and achieving goals. That’s it. Your definition may be different. What is it?

Think about what you want out of life. Write down the things you want to do. Just write down as many things you can think of, whether it’s learning how to do something new, improving your relationships, improving your health, anything. Your list is your list. No one else’s. Then, once you have gotten your big list, go through the list and identify three things you want to focus on first. Once you have spent some time deciding what your focus will be, write down what you will need to do each day to get yourself closer to achieving these three things.

Here’s an example: Let’s say I want to read 48 books this year. I write down getting books. I also write down reading books. I have two sources for the books I read. The first is a service called Freebooksy. The second service I use is a subscription service called Scribd. Between these services I have no shortage of books to read. Other sources I could use if I needed to are my public library and a Barnes and Noble store. The next step I will take is actually reading the book. One of the things I schedule daily is reading one chapter of a book. That’s it.

Your agenda or daily to-do list should be composed of the things you want to focus on each day. Obviously, you have a job you go to each day. This will eat up 8 hours of your life. Then you have 8 hours of sleep. That leaves you 8 hours to pursue the things you want to. This where you have to make a decision about what it is you want to do and how much time you will dedicate to it. We all have busy lives. I would recommend putting 30 minutes into each of your three things each day. If you want to exercise every day, that’s 30 minutes. If you want to read every day, that’s another 30 minutes. If you want to write every day, that’s another 30 minutes.

Spend 1 hour and 30 minutes each day on the three things you want to work on right now. To get your 30 minutes, you can use a focus timer. I use an app called Focus Keeper. It is a simple Pomodoro timer that will track 25 minutes of focused effort on each of your top three.

Track your progress for 5 days. At the end of the 5 days, did you spend your 30 minutes daily on each of these top three tasks? If not, begin looking at what happened instead. Do the 5 day evaluation of your focus for another work week. Did you make it this time? You’ll find that you may have some work to do in the focus area, if you keep missing your 30 minute times for each of these tasks over a two-week period. You can continue this exercise until you have established the habit of doing your top three things every day.

Here’s another example of what your agenda may look like:

  • Read 30 minutes everyday
  • Exercise 30 minutes everyday
  • Write 30 minutes everyday

Let’s say you try out this exercise of monitoring your focus for 3 weeks and still struggle with putting in your 30 minutes on one or more of your top three tasks. That’s ok. Maybe that’s just too much. You can try the Mini Habits technique to help. With Mini Habits, you won’t be so focused on the time you spend, but rather a specific task that takes minimal effort to accomplish. Instead of reading for 30 minutes each day, you could opt to read 1 chapter every day or read 1-2 pages every day. Instead of exercising for 30 minutes, you could use an app like the 5MHW. Instead of writing for 30 minutes you could write 250 words each day. You see how flexible this can be? This hack is used to establish habits and help you move a little closer to your goals each day.

Try this out, folks. If you struggle with setting and achieving goals, find out what you really want to do, set aside some time for these things each day, and then do them, even if you start out only doing 5-10 minutes of work toward each one of your goals initially. Even this small time commitment will generate results.

Remember, success is what YOU decide it is. Your definition will change over time, but remember success is self-defined. Don’t try to make success what other people define success as, even your favorite self-help guru. Success is yours, no one else’s.

I hope each of you has a terrific Wednesday!

Until next time…

Dave

Assessment, Balance, Goal Setting, New Year, Planning, Review, Well-roundedness

Over the next few days I’m going to be reviewing 2018. I’m also going to be formulating what I want to do with my 2019. If you’ve never done this kind of exercise, I’d highly recommend it. The first challenge I ran across when I began my annual habit of re-reading good books I’ve found, was what areas to focus on?

Here are the areas I use to formulate a New Year:

Physical

  • Diet Goals
  • Weight-loss goals
  • Exercise Goals
  • Nutrition Goals

Mental

  • What do I want to learn?
  • How many books do I want to read?
  • What podcasts do I want to watch/stop watching?
  • What courses do I want to take?

Spiritual

  • What spiritual practices do I want to continue?
  • What do I want to do to contribute to my fellow man?
  • What kindness can I spread to the world?
  • What types of spiritual questions do I want to pursue an answer to?
  • What spiritual books and courses do I want to take?

Social

  • Where can I go to meet new people (physically)?
  • Where can I go to meet new people (virtually)?
  • What activities can I do to engage with people?
  • How can I improve or maintain current relationships?
  • How can I gain more followers to my blog?

These are just some thoughts you may be able to think about for your own review and goal setting. I like to work through exercises like this because they help me to capture what really worked previously, what didn’t work, and what I can do to keep moving forward in my life. I think the most important aspect of this exercise, along with others, that bring some semblance of order and meaning to my life.

We all want to wake up energized and anxious to get to work. As a retiree, this has become a really important thing for me. I want my retired life to be profitable, meaningful, contributing, and fulfilling. These things represent different things to different people. I would challenge you to really assess what you value. What you want to achieve. What you want to do with yourself in the next year.

As promised, I’ll be posting my finalized plan for 2019 on the 31st of December. This was a good year. Next year will be better because I’ve built a solid foundation of writing, exercise, spiritual pursuits, and social activities. This year will be better because I am better. I have learned a great deal over the last year and look forward to begin applying all I have learned/re-learned.

I hope all of you have a terrific New Year’s Day! Take some time over the next few days and really think about all of your experiences in the last year. What did you learn? What do you want to apply to your future?

I’m excited to begin the new year and begin executing all of the things I am contemplating. I hope you have some time to figure out what you want and institute a plan that will bring all of your goals to fruition.

Until next time…

Dave

End of Year, Goal Setting, Mental, Physical, Social, Spiritual

I am really enjoying the holidays!

We had a nice post-Christmas day yesterday. We had leftovers, sat around our Christmas Tree to talk about various topics, and got to watch a good movie as a family last night. We watched Infinity War and it lived up to all the hype that surrounded it when it hit theaters.

If you’re a Marvel fan and missed out on this film when it was at the movie theaters, it was just released on Netflix. It is a long movie (about 2 hours) but is really good. I won’t provide any spoilers so you’ll have to watch it.

The remainder of this week I’ll be doing my annual readings of Getting Things Done, Mini-habits, and the 7 habits. I am reading The One Thing currently, along with a fiction book called 2136.

My exercise routine will be on hold until the New Year. I’ve been going at it hard and want to give my body a little breather as we approach the New Year. Then it’s off to the races!

I’m also working on my goals for the New Year. I’ll post these on New Year’s Eve. My goals will revolve around the spiritual dimension, physical dimension, mental dimension, and social dimension. One area I am seriously lacking is the social dimension. Since retirement and moving back to Michigan, my social network (besides the virtual one) have been seriously deteriorated. This year will be a focus of getting out there. I’m contemplating doing a lot of my writing at local coffee shops to just get out there and meet and interact with people. More on this later.

Well, that’s it for today, folks!

Until next time,

Dave

Achievement, Goal Setting, Harold Klemp, improvement, plus factor, Service

“One of the principles, or laws, of Divine Spirit is that there is always one more step. There is always one more heaven.” —Harold Klemp The Language of Soul

I believe in this quote. I think the universe would be boring if there was a place where no more improvement was possible. Think about that for a moment. I remember watching an episode of the Twilight Zone when I was a kid. This gangster was killed and went to “heaven”. As time passed, he started to become bored. Everything he did was perfect, he won at the gambling tables in heaven, he had all the good-looking girls, he had whatever he wanted. It finally dawned on him to ask the question: “This isn’t heaven is it?” and a man in a white suit, playing the part of the Devil, laughed insanely. The episode ended at that point. I think a heaven that existed, without any possibility of improving ourselves beyond what we achieve during our life, would be like this episode.

Improvement is gratifying. Improvement is motivating. Improvement shows us how we’ve grown through our own efforts. Without improvement, we stagnate. I don’t ever want to be in that position. I hope you don’t either.

Choose what you want to be good at. Set a goal. Set a date. Measure your progress. At some point, you’ll arrive. Then set another one.

Goals carry us forward and drive us to achieve things we didn’t think we could. This improvement also allows us to better support ourselves, help others, and build a skill. Achieving our goals is both challenging and rewarding. It is a self-perpetuating process, once you see even the smallest success. Whether you are in the gym, in your office, or at home, there is always one more thing we can improve for the better.

I hope all of you are having a terrific Saturday!

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Daily Quote – Winston Churchill – Reflection

Beginning anew, Goal Setting, Planning, Recharging, reflection, Winston Churchill

“Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection.” – Winston Churchill

I’m a huge fan of Winston Churchill and this quote is right on this time of year. I always get giddy during the holiday season. I enjoy the giving and grateful feelings that arise during this time of year. I also enjoy the time to relax, reflect, and the process of reviewing the year and how to move forward in the new.

What did I accomplish this year? Did I hit the goals I set for myself? What could I do better? Where could I focus my efforts in the New Year?

As I review things there are a few high points. The first is this blog. I didn’t realize how great it would be to create and write a blog. It’s awesome to see people from all over the world reading my postings and responding to them. The technology of today truly has created a global dialogue where people of different countries, cultures, and languages can interact with each other, learn about one another, and exchange ideas. It truly is a great time to be alive. Who knows what the future will bring. My guess is that we’ll see new devices, new technological breakthroughs, and a whole lot more.

I’ve written quite a bit about goal setting, self-discipline, leading a balanced life, and most recently about finding and pursuing your passion or life’s work. It’s hard to pursue these things when you’re supporting a family, working 9 to 5, and all the rest, but it is possible. If you are truly passionate about something, you’ll make it happen. For me, this year was the first year of my early retirement. I’ve found out a few things about myself that are quite interesting.

Retirement really isn’t retirement to me. I still have goals, I still have things I want to do in this life, and I still have a drive for a consistent and productive day. The only difference is that I am now in almost 100% control of my day. It is quite liberating, but also requires that much more self-discipline. Have you ever heard that saying, “The more rope you’re given, the more rope you’ll have to hang yourself”? This is the potential for retirement. You can either set up a daily schedule, plot out your goals and pursue them, or surf the net all day and get ZERO accomplished. Time will go by and you’ll wake up one day saying, “Where the hell did the year go?”

This year was a year of adjustment for me. Adjusting myself to a reduced income. Adjusting myself to all the time I have. Adjusting to living home with the parents and getting used to interacting with my Dad who loses more of his memory daily.

This month I’ll be finishing two books I read this time of year as part of my reflection. The first is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. The second is Getting Things Done by David Allen. I thoroughly enjoy both books because they really get you thinking. They also provide some helpful frameworks for planning, setting goals, and pursuing excellence in all areas of a person’s life.

I’ll begin work on the first of many books this year. The first step was finding a local coffee shop I could go to for my writing. I found one! It is called the Exquisite Corpse and it is nice. It will be my haunt after I get done with my gym routine. I like writing in areas where there are other things going on. I don’t need absolute solitude to create. Right now, as I write this blog posting, I am listening to some music. Music is one of the keys to my writing.

The rest of this month, in and around the holidays, will be mapping out the first quarter of the year. What do I want to accomplish? What’s the goal for the entire year? Once I’ve got things mapped out it’s off to set up a daily schedule to accomplish the things I set out to do. I really look forward to the New Year.

Well, that’s it for today folks. I hope you’ve enjoyed my writings this year and hope to continue to improve this blog to gather more followers. It’s all about the content and I’m still refining mine.

Until next time…

Dave

Achievement, Goal Setting, Setting your sights too high, Stretching, Winning

“Your goals should be just out of reach, but not out of site.” – Denis Waitley and Remi Witt

I think this is a novel idea and one that will definitely help you avoid the frustration caused by biting off more than you can chew. We’ve all done it right? We start out with a really cool goal that we are very motivated to complete only to find out that we lose steam or figure out we set our sights too high. Failing sucks right?

The suggestion here is to set a goal just out of reach. Let’s use reading for example. Assume you are pretty good at reading one book a month. That works out to 12 books a year. A reasonable goal would be to increase to 16 books a year because you would literally add one book to your reading schedule every 3 months. If we doubled our goal to 24 months it may be a bit too much. This is the difference between a stretch goal and one that is out of site. I’m not saying a person couldn’t stretch to 24 books a year, but it would definitely cause a pretty decent lifestyle change to double one’s reading capacity in one year.

Progression doesn’t have to be drastic. Like the example above, there’s no doubt a person couldn’t add 4 more books to their 12-book reading schedule in a year without causing too much stress. You would still read more than the year before but would meet this goal with some extra time spent in your library or den. This is what it means by stretching.

When setting goals, think small, incremental changes. These changes will build over time. They will continue to add value to your life, while not disrupting it.

One question you may have is how to set a goal for something you’ve never done before. This is a really good question and one you need to think about before setting your goal. The easiest way to get this answer is to seek out other people who have done the same thing. Find out from them what a realistic starting point would be. Then, set that goal and go for it. If you miss by a little bit, that’s ok. Adjust the goal downward or give it another go for the next 90 days. Whatever process you use is ok, as long as you can get to the finish line.

Start small, progress slowly, and celebrate your wins. This is truly the best way to set goals and achieve them and continue setting and achieving goals throughout your life. Simplicity is always the basis of truth. I’ve found this over and over again.

Until next time…

Dave

Daily Ramblings – Daily Quote – Karen Casey – Incremental Progress

Daily Focus, Goal Setting, Incremental Progression

Today’s quote:

“One part at a time, one day at a time, we can accomplish any goal we set for ourselves.” – Karen Casey

I like using weightlifting metaphors when discussing quotes like this. If you go to the gym and increase the weight you lift each time by 5-10 lbs, you can see how much weight you’ll be pushing by the end of the year. Realistically, this would be a difficult thing to do, as our bodies adjust to the increased stress and will plateau at various points.

Karen’s point is that if we just do a little bit of work towards our goals, we will achieve them. Some will take longer than others, but the results will be the same, provided you are taking the “right” actions to achieve your goals. Working out and then going home and drinking, smoking, and shoving your face full of junk food is counter-productive. You are literally working against yourself. This is just an example. I think you get the point.

I tend to set and work toward goals that are roughly 13 weeks. In 13 weeks I can read 3-4 books. In 13 weeks I can lose 13lbs or gain 13lbs. In 13 weeks I can write 91 pages. This is what incremental progression looks like and can produce as long as you carve out a little bit of time to achieve those daily goals that contribute to the weekly, quarterly and annual goals you set for yourself.

Take any goal you set. Break it down into easily accomplished tasks that will take roughly 13 weeks to accomplish and then figure out what you need to do each day to accomplish it. Here’s a quick walkthrough.

Let’s say I want to finish 3 books in 13 weeks. I figure out there are 40 chapters in all of the books I’ve identified. That’s roughly 1 chapter in each book per week. Now I take three days (Saturday, Sunday, and Thursday) and will read one book’s chapter on Saturday, another book’s chapter on Sunday, and another book’s chapter on Thursday. Easy right? After seeing how this exercise worked, is there any doubt in your mind that you would not be able to knock out all three books by the end of your 13-week goal period? No, as long as you stick to the plan, you’ll get there without any doubt.

You can do this with anything you are looking to accomplish. One piece of advice. There are some goals that will take you longer than 13 weeks obviously. In this case, you’ll have to break that goal down into smaller chunks, so that your “piece” of that goal can be accomplished in 13 weeks.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. I can help you with one of your goals if you need assistance.

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Daily Quote – Karen Lamb – SMART Goal Setting

Goal Setting, Mental, Physical, SMART acronym, Social, Spiritual

Today’s Quote:

“A year from now you may wish you had started today.” – Karen Lamb

Regret. It is a bad feeling, particularly when you beat yourself up over it. Don’t. We make decisions. Sometimes they are bad. Sometimes they are good.

Learn from them. Make adjustments.

Goal Setting, pursuing goals, and all the rest is a personal preference. Start on those goals, but stick with those goals you can knock out in 90-100 days. If you have a big goal like getting a degree, that’s ok. Break this big goal down over each of these 90-day periods. Perhaps, your goal would be to get an A in your class.

Goals should cover a few areas. I like to focus on four key areas for my goals. Mental – learn something new; Physical – workout; Social – make new friends and network; Spiritual – read my Bible daily and meditate. To measure these I set specific goals that I can track. By setting a timetable, I try to set achievable goals that I can meet with effort in 13 weeks. If you haven’t heard about it, there’s a great acronym for goal setting. It’s called S M A R T.

  • Specific (simple, sensible, significant).
  • Measurable (meaningful, motivating).
  • Achievable (agreed, attainable).
  • Relevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based).
  • Time-bound (time-based, time-limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive).

Bullets above are from https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/smart-goals.htm

Check this link out for more detail. Here’s an example for my Mental area.

I will read 3 non-fiction books by Feb 1, 2018, to learn more about writing novels.

This goal is specific to learning (Mental), it is measurable (3 books is 3 books), it is achievable (reading a chapter a day), relevant to my future writing career, and time-bound (due on February 1, 2018). This is as simple as it gets. You can set these goals for any area of your life. Try this out. Start out simple. Maybe you can only pursue 1 goal for the next 13 weeks. Figure out the total amount of work you have to do and spread it out monthly, weekly, and daily. You’ll be amazed how much you can get done. You’ll also be amazed how quickly you’ll attain some of your goals with the right daily focus.

That’s it for today!

Until next time…

Dave
