Daily Ramblings – Spiritual Saturday – Friends

As I write this post, one of my Mother’s friends is visiting. It’s great to see her hang out with other women, because frankly, hanging out with two guys all the time (Dad and I) is boring. Guys don’t talk like women do, at least Dad and I don’t.

Friends are those folks who know us. They know who we are, how we tick. Friendship lasts a lifetime, or they fade when we move, and forget to stay in touch. Today, that seems impossible, but I imagine it happens, particularly when a friendship really wasn’t to begin with.

I don’t have many friends, but the ones I have are lifers. My best friend is my wife, but I also have a significant group of folks in AZ that I stay in touch with. Our society is very mobile today. I moved back home to help my folks. One friend moved to Boston, another to Las Vegas. Still another moved to AZ as I was leaving. Things change, people change, but friendship remains.

Friendship is the best, isn’t it?

Until next time…

Andrew Carnegie, bugging, change, Detachment, Friends, Friendship, nagging

“You cannot push anyone up a ladder unless he be willing to climb a little himself.” – Andrew Carnegie

Have you ever tried to convince a friend or family member to go to the gym? It is like pulling teeth. Have you ever tried to get someone to give up smoking or drinking too much? Again, the same result.

People change when they’re ready to change. You can’t make them go any faster. People go at their own pace.

Instead of trying to change people, let them be who they are. If you don’t like who they are, drop them as a friend. Trust me, you’re doing them a favor. No one wants to be nagged or bugged to do or be something different. Love them for who they are.

I struggled with this for a long time. I finally gained an understanding of this in the last few years. You really have to let other people live their lives. Let them have their own opinions, pursue their own dreams, and keep their bad habits (if they have any). When you’re a true friend, you don’t care about the other person’s faults. You like the whole person–bad habits and all. A true friend will reciprocate.

Have a great Saturday, folks!

Until next time…

I’m only offering one challenge this week. This is it:

Challenge: Reach out to all of your family members to make sure they are OK.

I know most of you are already doing this, so it may not be too much of a challenge, but for those who have estranged family members, who live far away, would appreciate a call. Promise.

My stepmom is in Mexico. I used Google Translator, reached out on Facebook messenger, and she was so glad to hear from me.

Here’s the thing. I would hate to lose any of my family members without having a chance to touch base with them. There are so many stories in the papers, blogs, and books that highlight how horrible it is to lose someone and miss the opportunity to say you care for them. I hope this doesn’t happen to you. Take a minute and reach out. It doesn’t take long, it’ll prevent you from worrying, and the other person will feel great.

Well, that’s all I got today. Have a great Sunday!

Until next time…

Dave

Daily Ramblings – Thankful Thursdays – Kind Words and Friendship

Blogging, Comments, Connecting, Connection, Friends, Friendship, Grateful, Thankful

Today I’d like to thank the thoughtful bloggers that wished me well this week as I fight through a cold. What a wonderful gift.

What I find most fascinating is that small interactions over time can truly turn into a friendship. I know the terms friend and friendship have changed meaning in our new virtual world, but the sentiment is still the same. Friends are people who care about one another. They may not talk every day, but the feeling is there.

It’s interesting. I have been blogging for a little over 3 years and it took me this long to figure it out. You have to engage with other people to open the door to friendship. If you write your blog postings and never interact with other people in the blogosphere, you will likely remain alone, other than the random like here or there. We all love comments and feedback. To get this feedback and receive comments you have to take the first step. At least that is what I have discovered.

So, THANK YOU! Lillie, CrazyKat1963, and K.M. Allan for your kind words of encouragement. I am grateful for our friendship. It truly means a lot to me. And this is where I will end my posting today.

Until next time…

Dave

Arnold Glasow, family, Friendship

“A true friend never gets in your way unless you happen to be going down.” – Arnold H. Glasow

This quote is about friendship. I don’t know about you, but friends are hard to come by, particularly friends like the one Glasow discusses. If you have a great friend, someone you can count on for anything—you are truly blessed.

I have a few friends. One friend is my brother. Whenever I’ve hit a rough patch, he’s been there. When he’s hit one, I’m there for him. The same goes for my Mom and Dad. They are always there, rooting for me. Fortunately, I was in a position in December to retire early and now can spend time with them in their “Golden Years”. It is a true privilege to help your Mom and Dad and spend time with them before they leave this Earth. My sister is also a great friend. She’s helped me out a few times over the years, and I have tried to reciprocate when she’s had a downturn.

If you have a friend outside of your family, cherish them. These people are gold.

I hope all of you are having a terrific Monday!

See you tomorrow…

Emerson, Friends, Friendship

“A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. Before him, I may think aloud.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Happy Saturday everyone! The weekends are meant for rejuvenating, spending time with friends and family, and maybe even doing a little self-exploration. These quotes from Emerson are about the infinite capabilities that lie within us and the pricelessness of true friendship.

My weekend started off with a great upper-body cardio workout (lots of reps, minimal rest periods, and light weights).

Today we went to Richmond, MI and visited one of their flea markets. My folks love antiquing and flea markets so we spent the day rummaging through all kinds of things displayed by the numerous vendors there. We also had a great breakfast at a place called the Village Cafe. It was really busy for a small town like Richmond. I had a pork chop and eggs breakfast that was phenomenal. My Dad had his typical eggs and toast and my Mom had a Tuna Sandwich without the bread (she is allergic to gluten). A great meal, once we got sat down.

The rest of my day will be reading, getting caught up on my writing, and preparing for another day of cardio at the gym. I hope everyone’s weekend is going well!

Here’s to adventure, recharging batteries, and hanging out with friends and family.

See you tomorrow…
