Memorial Day is a U.S. holiday to remember those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms and way of life. It is a solemn day, and is typically a day where cemeteries are visited, speeches are given, and homage is paid around the world to all of the men and women who died for the freedoms many countries enjoy today.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Day

Arlington cemetery is an awe-inspiring cemetery, where many of our fallen heroes are buried. There are also many cemeteries in the Pacific Islands, Normandy France, and even parts of Italy. Wherever we fought, there are those that are buried there and celebrated by the local townsfolk, whose lives were transformed by the young boys who died fighting in their towns and backyards.

Many of you have relatives who served, who died, or are currently serving in one of the Armed Forces today. You know how special this weekend is.

Happy Memorial Day, all.

Until next time…

Many know of Dr. Jordan Peterson because he has quite a lot of notoriety for his political beliefs. Some consider him a member of the Far Right, which is typically associate with neo-Nazis and the KKK. If you can avoid being sucked into this argument, he has recorded his lecture on Personality, which is free on YouTube. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0xBOMWJkgM&list=PLYiqiGXyix6-Np9ONLHdHgRlHayGh4mXD

This lecture series is one of my favorites. He also has a lecture series on Maps of Meaning, tailored after his book. He also has a lecture series on the Bible. Very interesting lectures, but his lectures on personality are phenomenal. I highly recommend them.

Why do I bring this up today? Because I just started rewatching it. I like these lectures because they are just terrific. He teaches a great deal and his style of lecturing is very entertaining. In this series he talks about many clinical psychologists like Jung, Rogers, and Freud. He also addresses the various philosophies of psychology like existentialism and others.

If you’ve never seen this guy, I cannot recommend it enough. It is fantastic. You’ll learn a great deal about yourself and the greater world around you.

From time-to-time, I go through periods where I cannot learn enough fast enough. This is one of those times. I tend to read very intensely, for at least an hour a day and it is predominantly non-fiction reading. These are the periods where I knock out the majority of my Goodreads reading challenge. I shoot for 60 books a year. Some of these are books I reread each year, but most are new books that caught my interest. Some of these interests are generated by blogs I read that suggest a book or some topic I am just interested in.

I like to write about a great many topics and this is yet another free writing example. I hope you give this guy a shot. He is terrific.

Have a great Friday, folks.

Until next time…

Here are some of the prominent women in history who contributed to science. What a collection of unique and talented women! I recommend reading the Wikipedia articles on those you do not recognize. I did not know who Chien-Shiung Wu was and boy, was I surprised.

I hope you are all enjoying learning about all these women this month. I’ll continue to find more and more of them as we approach the end of Women’s History month. Chat GPT, the new GPT-4, and the new Bing searches all helped me in my quest to find the unique and well-known.

Happy Friday to all of you. I hope you have a great Friday and weekend.

Until next time…

BlackBirch 3, Diet, free writing, Gum Disease, Learning, Reading, The Carnivore Diet, The Keto Diet

I love the snowy months. We’ve gotten hit with about 6 inches with more in store for the next few days. Snowy days are great days for reading, writing, and all the other things I do from the comfort of my office chair. I finished a few books this week. The first was Blackbirch 3 from my friend and author in Australia, K.M. Allan. I also finished the book The Carnivore Diet. This book has been on my reading list for a while. I picked it up after seeing a YouTube video from Joe Rogan interviewing Dr. Jordan Peterson. He has been on the Carnivore diet for about a year at the time of this showing. His wife, daughter, and he have adopted this diet because of health issues in his family. Autoimmune disease, depression, and arthritis in his daughter. Remarkably, they have all come of anti-depressants, his gum disease has disappeared, and he has lost about 60 pounds.

I too suffer from gum disease and have also felt some other changes occurring that I’m not too happy with. So, I’m going to embark on my own adventure into the carnivorous diet. I don’t know if I’ll go as hard as the Petersons, which literally means they eat beef and nothing else, but salt and water, but I’ll definitely give it a go. Gum disease is incurable and is no fun. I was diagnosed in 2018 and have been dealing with it ever since. I had an appointment with a dentist to get to work on this, but when I found out the procedure would run me about $6000.00, and there was no guarantee that it would go away, I passed and have looked for more homeopathic solutions. Diet is one of them, since changing diet will also change the biome in my gut and mouth. The theory is: If you stop eating things that feed a certain type of bacteria that lives within you, those bacteria that are harmful will die off and the bacteria that is needed to digest meat will survive.

I’ve tried the Keto diet in the past and it was really effective at weight loss, but it was too hard to track. Fat is the primary food source Keto dieters use. It has been very effective for those with Diabetes, but the measuring of yourself for being in Ketosis is very difficult, not to mention, tracking all the things you need to track, so I gave it up as too unsustainable. The Carnivore diet, on the other hand, is easy. Eat meat. That’s it. So, I’m going to give it a whirl. My way of moving to a new diet is not a radical change overnight, but gradual. I’ll see what it does and how it impacts me.

I read a lot of books at the same time. I enjoy reading non-fiction, but also enjoy fiction and spiritual books. So, I always read at least three at a time. Currently I am reading: A Deadly Influence, The Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad book 2, and I’ve got to find another non-fiction book to dive into. I don’t know what I’m going to read, but I’ll start looking today.

Well, I’m done for now. I hope all of you have a great Friday and weekend. Here’s to a hot cup of coffee on a snowy day!

Until next time…

All, I’ve decided to alter my postings on Thursday. I’ve been posting what I’m reading, what I’m learning, and what I’m watching, but frankly it bores me to tears. I imagine it bores many of you too, so I’m going to leave Thursday a free writing day, where I write about whatever comes to mind. I’m going to call Thursday my “Free Writing Day”.

I hope all of you like what I come up with and have a great weekend!

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Motivation Monday – Journaling first thing in the morning

12 Monday Apr 2021

I hope your Monday is going well!

I have touched on journaling quite a few times in my postings, but wanted to address it again here. I do a free-writing session every morning for about 5-10 minutes. It literally is the first thing I do (after making a cup of coffee, of course). I fired this practice up again recently, because I find it helps me clear my head and get on with the work of the day much more easily.

Do you deal with a lack of focus on Monday morning? This may be the hack to get you through it.

I use One Note, one of the applications offered by Microsoft 365, but you could also use Apple’s pages or Google docs. I like using One Note because it is available on all of my devices. Whatever you decide to use, try this out. I find some days where I have all kinds of things to write about, while other days I’m pressed to get in a few sentences. The days when I do not have anything to write actually a good thing. It means the mind is clear. There are no pressing issues to disrupt your task flow for the remainder of the day. The practice will keep it this way.

Your brain dump sessions can be about anything. Just write down whatever comes in. It could be a dream you had, a reminder to do something you haven’t recorded anywhere, or even a review of the books, movies, or articles you’ve read. It literally is anything that is in your mind. If you are having troubles, this is a great way to get those troubles out of your head an on paper–a very healthy move psychologically.

Give this a whirl, folks. Many people do this every day and I have to tell you, it works.

Have a great day, folks!

Until next time…

Dave
