Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a national holiday in the United States. For those of you who are readers and from outside the U.S., here is a Wikipedia link where you can read about him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther_King_Jr.

I always include a video of his iconic “I have a dream” speech. Enjoy!

I hope all of you enjoy your day today. It is a great day to remember how far we have come as a nation, but also recognize we have a long way to go. I do not think we will ever overcome prejudice entirely, but I do believe we can continue to improve. A work in progress, so to speak.

Have a great Monday, folks!

Until next time…

The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.

Alice Walker

No person is your friend who demands your silence, or denies your right to grow.

Alice Walker

Don’t wait around for other people to be happy for you. Any happiness you get you’ve got to make yourself.

Alice Walker

In nature, nothing is perfect and everything is perfect. Trees can be contorted, bent in weird ways, and they’re still beautiful.

Alice Walker

In search of my mother’s garden, I found my own.

I hope all of you are having a terrific “hump” day.

There is no better teacher than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.

Malcolm X

Stumbling is not falling.

Malcolm X

My Alma mater was books, a good library… I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity.

Malcolm X

The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.

Malcolm X

If you’re not ready to die for it, put the word ‘freedom’ out of your vocabulary.

Folks, in light of Black History Month, I decided to circumvent my funny Friday video with Martin Luther King’s I have a Dream speech. Here it is in its entirety. Dr. King was one of the primary movers during the 1960s that ultimately helped create the Civil Rights act and so many other pieces of legislation that were designed to help change the laws of the land that impacted the African American Community and so many other groups in the United States.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I watch this speech each year and wanted to share it with you.

Have a great weekend, folks!

Until next time…

To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time.

James Baldwin

The most dangerous creation of any society is the man who has nothing to lose.

James Baldwin

Anyone who has ever struggled with poverty knows how extremely expensive it is to be poor.

James Baldwin

Those who say it can’t be done are usually interrupted by others doing it.

James Baldwin

I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.

James Baldwin

I hope you enjoyed these quotes from another great American civil rights activist and novelist. Here’s a Wikipedia link to learn more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Baldwin I love learning about different people. This makes Wednesday one of my favorite days as I explore the web for interesting content. Have a great Wednesday, folks!

“The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.”
― Ida B. Wells-Barnett

“one had better die fighting against injustice than to die like a dog or a rat in a trap”
― Ida B. Wells

“A Winchester rifle should have a place of honor in every black home, and it should be used for that protection which the law refuses to give.”
― Ida B. Wells-Barnett

“If Southern white men are not careful, they will overreach themselves and public sentiment will have a reaction; a conclusion will then be reached which will be very damaging to the moral reputation of their women.”
― Ida B. Wells-Barnett, The Red Record

“Burning and torture here lasts but a little while, but if I die with a lie on my soul, I shall be tortured forever. I am innocent.”
― Ida B. Wells-Barnett, The Red Record

Ida B. Wells was addressed yesterday as well, and I felt it wise to honor her again. Her work shined a light on the lynchings of the South. She was another firebrand responsible for the greater civil rights movement to come. Here’s her Wikipedia link in case some of you would like to learn more about this trailblazer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ida_B._Wells

Here’s another link to Ida B. Well’s place in the National Women’s History Museum: https://www.womenshistory.org/education-resources/biographies/ida-b-wells-barnett

As we approach the end of Black History Month, ponder the challenges, sacrifices, and dangers the members of the civil rights movement faced. This is a true testament of bravery in the face of death threats, violence, and a government that did not want to do the right thing.

Until next time…

I hope you enjoy this video about Ida B. Wells. She was a journalist in the 1850s that exposed lynching both in the United States and Europe for what it was–murder. In many cases, she discovered that blacks were targeted whenever their businesses or ideas competed with white businesses and ideas.

Congressman John Lewis passed away and will leave a huge hole in the United States Congress. Although I didn’t agree with his politics, he was one of the many individuals that stood along Martin Luther King, Jr., during America’s Civil Rights Movement. Rest in peace, sir.

Until next time…
