Daily Ramblings – Motivation Monday – Exciting Projects

There’s nothing more motivating than working on something that you enjoy doing. The motivation is internal, because you enjoy it, you are good at it, and it feels great when you’ve accomplished something that fits all these parameters. It’s hard to be demotivated when you are doing something you enjoy.

Many of you highlight your love of quilting, woodworking, you name it. Are you ever unmotivated to do that thing that wakes you up in the morning? I know I am not. When I am working on my book or learning something new, it is just so easy for me to get to work. Now, I’m not a professional writer by any stretch of the imagination. I write for me.

Perhaps you do woodworking like my blogging friend does, for the sheer love of the project and how a new piece will serve your family and add to the decor of your place. Perhaps you enjoy gardening like my Mom does. Each year it is one project after another to get those healthy, fresh vegetables to the dinner table, but each year, despite her age, she is out there in that garden. Why? Because all of the people I have described have a passion for these things.

If you ever find yourself having some issues with a favorite project. The project starts to lose its excitement and your passion is wilting on the vine. Take a break from it. There’s no harm in taking some time off from one of your favorite things. Life can also get in the way. Illness in the family, and perhaps other issues, are stepping on your ability to really enjoy your favorite project because you have so many pressing needs. That’s ok too. We all need to take care of ourselves.

Life also causes us to change. Maybe writing is no longer your thing. Maybe gardening is becoming too much now that the kids are out of the house. Perhaps, you have changed your interest area. That’s ok too. Go with it. There’s no rule in the book about how long we stay interested and passionate about a thing we’re doing. The only rule is one we create for ourselves.

Have a great Monday, folks. Here’s to all of our favorite projects and the motivation and passion that go along with it.

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Motivation Monday – Insomnia

Accepting, Adapting, change, creativity, health, Ingenuity, Insomnia

For those of you who follow my blog, you are probably wondering why my posts appear so late in the day. I am writing it at 6 PM my time in Michigan. It’s late in the day, because this is actually my morning. You see I’ve been experiencing insomnia for some time now. It started more than a year ago, where my sleep schedule literally flipped. So when you are sleeping in the wee hours of the morning, I am wide awake. I typically do not go to bed until 4 – 7 am. Then I sleep all day. Now, if I was still working this would not be a good solution, but since I am retired, I’ve made my peace with it and literally accept it for what it is.

Ailments like this can be debilitating, but if you have the ability to be flexible, the solution that presents itself can be quite liberating. For me, the peace and quiet in the house as everyone is sleeping, allows me to do some deep thinking, reading, and get a lot of writing done without too many interruptions. I’m pretty quiet, so I don’t keep anyone up. I am literally married to my laptop and iPad and get all my work done on these tools.

Since my sister works all day, she and I catch our shows in the evening.

For some insomnia would be a very demotivating issue. For me, it has had no impact. My gym is open 24 hours a day, so I can use it when everyone else is not there. COVID also forced me to develop a good home workout using exercise bands and other things like our stairs, so when the weather sucks, I can get in a good workout whenever I wish.

Change is always occurring. Every 7 to 10 years, your body replaces itself. Pay attention to these 7-year intervals. When your body changes, listen to it. Change your diet, accept the changes, and adapt to them. In many cases, there’s a silver lining out there waiting for you to discover.

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Thankful Thursday – Seasons

While I lived in Southern California and Arizona, I thought I was the luckiest guy on Earth. The weather was perfect. Blue skies and warm weather. After 7 years in the Arizona desert, I became bored with the blue skies. I became bored with the perfect weather.

Now that I am back in Michigan, we have a full four seasons and it is awesome! It is Springtime, with the green grass, blooming flowers, new buds on the trees, and all the rest. It’s a great time!

So today, I am grateful for the four seasons and all their variety.

Have a great day, folks!

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Motivation Monday – Failure is alright.

Adapt, change, Creative, Errors, failing, Learning, Losing, Mistakes, Winning

I’ve written about failure many times before on this blog. I am addressing it again today because it is so important to achieving anything. I’m a huge video game fan. My current game is Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. What a title right? It is a great game and tons of fun, particularly when my brother and nephew join in. Whenever I begin playing a new game, I alway screw up huge in the beginning. You are learning the game mechanics, the tips and tricks, the maps, the different modes of play, and so much more. If I quit playing because I fail to win a match here or there, I lose huge.

Playing the game is about winning and losing. If you win, it feels great. If you lose, it doesn’t feel so good, but that feeling motivates me to get out there and play another match. You see? We need failure so we can learn from past mistakes. We also need failure to remind us how good it feels to win. If you fail a bunch, and finally get a win, regardless of how small, it always feels awesome.

So get out there, folks! Get out there and put your best effort in. If you win–AWESOME. If you lose, figure out where you went wrong, and get back at it. The win is waiting for you.

I hope all of you have a terrific week!

Until next time…

Adapt, change, Covid, Flexibility, habits, Improvise, Overcome, Resistance, viewpoint

I write articles for a newsletter for my religious group that is published every month and was prompted to write about change for the upcoming edition. Today’s post is about change. I hope you enjoy it.

We are still dealing with COVID; we are dealing with a new government, and we are dealing with all the changes these two events will have on our lives. Why do we fight change when it comes?

Change is difficult because we are all “wired” against it. Our brains are very sophisticated and seek efficiency at every turn. When a big change occurs, our brains fight it. Why? Because our brains exhaust a lot of energy when change comes. So the brain minimizes or even resists change because of the energy it requires to literally rewire ourselves to adapt a change.

My sister and wife both made job changes recently. It is interesting to watch both of them go through the changes of learning a new job, the training they are going through, and how each reacts to the changes brought on by these job changes. Think about the changes COVID has brought into your life. Are they easy for you or difficult? For most, the changes are hard.

Changes related to going out to dinner, changes related to staying home, changes related to wearing a mask, and changes related to the normal, mundane things we are all accustomed to. When change comes, we tend to think about what has been taken away, rather than what has been given.

Think about how much reading you’ve gotten done in light of these changes to our lives. Think about the new hobbies or activities you are now doing because of the virus. Think about how much more you interact with your family over the phone or via ZOOM, Skype, or Google Chat.

A wise man once said to me, “Things are not done to us; they are done for us.” Simple, right? Imagine if we looked at life this way. Everything in our life is done for us, not to us. A play on words, perhaps, but still a powerful message and a terrific way to look at life.

I am a person who always looks for the positive things in life. Despite the lockdowns, and all the other changes the virus has brought into our lives, there are many good things that resulted from the changes wrought by this nasty little bug. I read more than I have at any other time in my life. I have learned more in the last year than I did in previous years. I have had to alter my exercise regimen, but the new exercise plan I follow is just as good or better than when I went to the gym all the time. During the winter months I work out at home because our roads aren’t so great during the winter and I don’t like to take unnecessary risks when the snow comes. Not a huge change when you think about it.

COVID has touched my family. My wife, my brother, and my nephew and his girlfriend all got it. Luckily, no one was hospitalized. My parents have been COVID free, mainly because we are all hermits and I only go out to get groceries or run errands. Since retirement, I stay at home most of the time anyway. All of my work is done right on this laptop. I read, write, learn, and entertain myself on this laptop or my Xbox console.

This year will be a great learning year, because there are so many things I need to learn for the new position I hold in ECKANKAR. My role as the State of Michigan’s lead missionary, require knowledge in data science, digital marketing, MS Excel charts, graphic design, and yes, even some programming. Does the role require that I learn these things? Not really. But I’ve always been the person who likes to take a position to a new level. By learning these things, I’ll be better prepared to understand the data we are receiving from our website, Facebook page, and our numerous Meetups that we use to put out the ECKANKAR message in Michigan.

Change is only hard when we fight it. Change is only painful when we only look at what we have lost. Change can be good, if you look at the change in a positive light. Look at what you have gained over the last year. Look at the changes you took to protect yourself and comply with your government guidance. What changes did you make? Were they beneficial? Mine were.

There’s a story I read a long time ago about trees. There was a passage about willow trees and how they “bend” with the wind, instead of trying to fight it. The wind in this case is a metaphor for the changes that come into our lives. Those that are most flexible survive; those that are not tend to “snap”. Be the willow during these changing times. Your flexibility will allow you to survive the changes in these tumultuous times. The weight of these changes will not break you, because you will be flexible enough to let the weight of these changes fall from your limbs.

Life goes on. Regardless of the changes brought on by external events like COVID, governmental elections, or anything else, we also change over time. Change is inevitable. Change will happen. Accept the changes that come and do your best. Be grateful for all the things that change brings into your life. You’ll find a new gratitude for these changes and life will be much easier. Change is only hard when we resist it.

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Spiritual Saturday – The Dark Times

altering your thinking, change, Dark Night of Soul, Dark times, despair, Making Changes, The Pit, Unhappiness

Some days I am very nostalgic. I think about my life and all the things that have occurred. There are some times where I was on top of the world; at other times I was in a pit. The pit is where nothing works, nothing is right, nothing is all there is. Some have labeled these times periods as the “dark night of soul.”

There are a lot of blogs that people write to overcome a trauma. These blogs range from topics like dealing with various diseases, unfaithful mates, and other topics that are troubling to people. Many are experiencing their own dark times and use blogging as a tool to climb out of the pit they find themselves. This is healthy. Working yourself out of your personal dark times is something that inspires others who may be experiencing the same thing.

Dark times can span a short period of time. They can also span many years. It really depends how deep a person’s pit is. I would wager that there are a few people who enjoy the pity that comes to them when they are experiencing dark times and stick around longer than needed. There is still a smaller population that finds themselves in the pit and don’t want to leave. They’d prefer the “safety” of the pit, rather than digging themselves out and experiencing something new that is too frightful.

My experience during dark times has always been transforming. I have experienced my share of dark times throughout my life. Each time I find myself in these types of situations, I recognize where I am and begin planning ways to escape. I test out each one in my mind and then choose one that has the best chances of turning my situation around.

A certain level of pride comes from escaping or resolving the times we are in those dark times. It feels good to stand up, dust ourselves off, and begin anew. Yet, there are still some who cling to what they know and never escape. Their dark times become the new norm. Instead of escaping their pit, they begin decorating it, surrendering to this new lot in life.

How do you get out of the dark times? The dark times call for a change. They require a change because this is the only way to get out. The dark times come when something—more than one thing – collapses. Perhaps you’re living beyond your means, or you’ve put too much faith in another person. When these unsustainable situations collapse in on themselves there is a feeling that we are trapped, like an insect in a spider’s web. In one of my situations, I couldn’t help but have the feeling of walking off a cliff and not being able to stop myself. We get out of our dark times by making a decision to change our way of thinking and doing things differently.

Sometimes we need help to get out of our personal pits. We need the help of a psychiatrist or counselor. At other times we may need a financial advisor, medical professional, or a family member. Sometimes the shock of our dark times requires an entire change of mindset. Whatever you do during the dark times requires a change. A change of circumstances, a change of location, a change of values, a change in diet, or a change of employers.

To escape the pit, you must want to escape. No one can do it for you. The only way out of the dark times is to look for a way out. Once you do, things will get better.

For those of you experiencing the “dark night of soul”, I wish you well on your journey. It is a tough time. It will get better. It always does.

Until next time…

change, Different, Simple, Spread Your Wings, Sunday, tech free hour, Weekly Challenge

Here we are again! It’s Sunday folks. I hope each of you are having a great weekend!

Weekly Challenge: This week’s challenge is a simple one. Take one hour away from all technology (cell phones, laptops, computers, etc.). In today’s overly technical world, this can be tough, but the key is to stay away from your mobile phone, laptop, or computer for just one hour. Evaluate how you feel at the end of the hour and drop a comment on how this impacted you.

Until next time…

Howdy, folks!

I have been contemplating a move for my “do nothing day” and decided that Friday is a better day for that. Subsequently, I’ve decided to shut down my Funny Friday to accommodate this. I’ll still post random funnies that I find, but want to keep my “do nothing day” pure, so Friday has to go.

I hope everyone has a terrific Weekend.

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Spiritual Saturday – You Can’t Change Other People.

Andrew Carnegie, bugging, change, Detachment, Friends, Friendship, nagging

“You cannot push anyone up a ladder unless he be willing to climb a little himself.” – Andrew Carnegie

Have you ever tried to convince a friend or family member to go to the gym? It is like pulling teeth. Have you ever tried to get someone to give up smoking or drinking too much? Again, the same result.

People change when they’re ready to change. You can’t make them go any faster. People go at their own pace.

Instead of trying to change people, let them be who they are. If you don’t like who they are, drop them as a friend. Trust me, you’re doing them a favor. No one wants to be nagged or bugged to do or be something different. Love them for who they are.

I struggled with this for a long time. I finally gained an understanding of this in the last few years. You really have to let other people live their lives. Let them have their own opinions, pursue their own dreams, and keep their bad habits (if they have any). When you’re a true friend, you don’t care about the other person’s faults. You like the whole person–bad habits and all. A true friend will reciprocate.

Have a great Saturday, folks!

Until next time…

April 26, change, Lockdown, new generation, Sunday, Weekly Challenge

Here we are! One more week passes us by in lockdown. It’ll be interesting when generations are born that don’t know anything about this. Whatever we decide to do as a society on the upcoming months may require permanent changes in how we work, how we play, how we socialize, and to a new generation born outside of this, it’ll all seem normal. The changes we make as a society won’t be a change to them. It’ll be normal. Crazy, right?

Change is inevitable in this world. In fact, it is something you can count on. Changes in relationships, changes in jobs, changes in health, changes in interests, change, change, change. Why do we fight it? Why not accept what is and adapt to the new circumstances? Because we’re human. We like consistency. We like things to stay the same.

This week, let’s mix it up a bit. The challenge is simple.

Weekly Challenge: Change one thing in your life, your daily routine, or your schedule. Do something that is different every day for a week. Reply in the comments with what you came up with, regardless of how small it was.

Until next time…

Dave
