It seems that our political discourse, along with any other type of discourse, particularly online, has digressed to trolling, outrage, attacking others, and spouting our points of view to enrage, rather than discuss. In light of all this, today’s Thinking Tuesday posting is quite apropos.
I was prompted to seek out some information on this, since I am taking a course in college that highlights communication in higher education. Here you go! Enjoy!
Have a great week, folks!
Until next time…
Dave
Excellent topic! The video is short, easy to understand an much needed. The first thing I learned in my intro to counseling course was active listening where you reflect back what you heard and maybe summarize without adding your own opinions. One thing I would add to the de-escalating tool kit is trying to find common ground. We can usually find something we agree on.

Yeah, that is necessary. They touched on it lightly when they mentioned putting yourself in the other person’s shoes, but yes, common ground is key, even if it is a little thing.

This was really good! De-escalation should be a priority. Breathing first sounds very good. Acknowledging other person’s point of view sounds critical to de-escalation!

Yeah, especially today in our politically-charged climate.
