Today is Memorial Day. It is a day in the United States that we honor the fallen—those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. We also honor those families who lost someone serving the country.

So today, I thank all veterans and their families for their sacrifices to America—you will never be forgotten.

Until next time…

Today, there will be no joke. Instead, I wanted to write a little about how fast time moves along when we are engaged with something. I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately, and just fell off my to-do list because the book was so riveting. I’m reading one of Bill Woodward’s book, called The Price of Politics. The book is about the Obama administration, discussing some of the key moments where he and the Republicans were banging head. The current story is about the budget negotiations prior to the 2012 Presidential election. What a crazy story. Woodward is really good at describing the nuances and complexity of negotiations between the House, Senate, and the Obama White house.

For some, reading political history is a little dull. I like to read history related to politics, prominent figures, and the military. I have to say that this book has been particularly engaging, because Woodward writes about something that occurred only a few years ago. By the way, his books on the Trump administration were also good. They are called Fury and Rage.

Anyway, time got away from me, as I ran down the Woodward rabbit hole the last few days. Am I done? No. There is still more to read. I’ll take advantage of the long weekend to do just that.

I hope all of you have a terrific Memorial Weekend. For those of you who are serving, or have relatives that are serving, I thank you for your or their service. I also would like to thank those who have fallen while serving our country. These people who made the ultimate sacrifice are those who we commemorate this weekend.

In light of this, I will not be back on here until Tuesday. Have a great weekend folks!

Until next time…

If you’ve ever experienced one of these, it is bad. It’s like you’re awake, yet not. It’s hard to explain. That’s why I thought Ami could explain it better. Watch this short video about a topic that may plague you. I have always found that the best way to face a fear is to understand it. Enjoy!

Until next time…

May is a very strange month for weather. It will either be sunny, calm, and getting warmer, or it will rain, stay somewhat cold, and continue for the bulk of the month. If your mood is impacted by the weather, you are not alone. Many people suffer ill effects when there is less sunshine.

Regardless of your mood, you have a job to do. You have goals to achieve. You have the means and ability to do what is required. So get out there and get it done! You’ll feel great when you achieve what you set out to do, be it a day, a week, month, or year.

Feeling overwhelmed by it all? No problem. Break down some of the steps in your action plan to an even smaller degree. You’ll see that the smaller the task, the less resistance you’ll have in completing it. That’s the key. Reduce your resistance to something you have to do, so you can do it, without procrastination rearing its ugly head. Once you’ve gotten some momentum going with these smaller tasks, you will see how quickly these small tasks build to bigger accomplishments.

Have a great week, folks!

Until next time…

After a preacher died and went to heaven, he noticed a New York cab driver had been awarded a higher place than he. “I don’t understand,” he complained to God. “I devoted my entire life to my congregation.”

God explained to him, “Our policy here in heaven is to reward results. Now, was your congregation well attuned to you whenever you gave a sermon?”

“Well,” the minister had to admit, “some in the congregation fell asleep from time to time.”

“Exactly,” said God, “and when people rode in this man’s taxi, they not only stayed awake, they even prayed.”

Daily Ramblings – Motivation Monday – New Spreader

calendar, emergencies, flex-time, Flexibility, Planning, To-do Lists, unexpected priorities

Today’s task that overrode all others was putting together a spreader for the folks. Most of the spreaders at Home Depot, Lowe’s, and a specific store in our area called Menards’ only carry spreaders that need to be assembled, at least those spreaders that are reasonably priced. Anyway, when I have something to do for my folks, that becomes the priority of the day. My stuff can wait. I took a break from assembly to come in and enjoy some coffee, but will be heading out soon to finish up. Almost done!

The reason I brought this up is that despite our need to control every facet of our day, there are times when something needs to be done and you can’t push it off or reschedule it. Unpredictable things, emergency things. This is one of the key reasons to plan your day with some flexibility in mind. One of my Mom’s friends mis-stepped on the landing going into her house and broke her ankle.

Each of us has our priorities. We have home maintenance, personal hygiene, bookkeeping, errands, our jobs, etc. These things can be planned, but some room should be left in your calendar as “flex-time”, then if you have to step on something due to an emergency or some other unexpected priority, you have the ability to move your calendar around.

For me, since I am retired (thank God), I really only need to put important meetings on my calendar. The rest of my day I run with my time management app (Any.do). Then I have the flexibility built in. The key is to get all the things on my list done for the day, it doesn’t matter what order I do them in, or when I do them. It just matters that I finish all I have on my daily to-do list, most of which is recurring daily.

Well, that’s it for today. There are literally hundreds of ways to run your day. Each of us needs to find out what works best for us. These will change as we do, but you understand what I’m saying. Have a plan, but plan for the unexpected. The only way to do this is to leave some flexible time open on your calendar.

Well, folks, that’s it for today. Have a great week!

Until next time…

Two men are discussing the ailing health of their parents.

“I feel bad,” the first man says. “My dad is senile. All he does is stare through the window all day long.”

“That’s an awful way to live.” the second man responds.

“Yeah, I know,” the man admitted. “One day I should really let him in the house.”

Daily Ramblings – Thinking Thursday – Ransomeware

This week, particularly if you were in the Southeastern United States, you experienced what an oil shortage looks like. Long lines, no gas at your local gas station, and dramatic price increases. What caused it? A ransomeware attack.

Ransomware is a malware that attacks systems by encrypting them, rendering them impossible to read by the owner. The hacker then proposes a ransom to attain the encryption keys that will unlock a customer’s owned data. Pretty insidious, right?

The attack on Colonial Pipeline was one such attack. It was announced today that Colonial is back up and running, but the effects may be felt for a few more days or weeks, as the oil begins to flow again.

For those of you who are interested, check out the CISA site. CISA stands for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. They are responsible for monitoring attack profiles, technical exploits, and other vulnerabilities in the software and hardware we use and make recommendations to public and private organizations on how to protect themselves from potential attack. Here’s the link on the CISA’s guidance on Ransomware: https://www.cisa.gov/ransomware#:~:text=Ransomware%20is%20an%20ever%2Devolving,ransom%20in%20exchange%20for%20decryption

I enjoy reading things like this, particularly when they become news. I hope you enjoy it!

Until next time…

Dave
