Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.

William Feather

Early morning cheerfulness can be extremely obnoxious.

William Feather

The wisdom of the wise and the experience of the ages is preserved into perpetuity by a nation’s proverbs, fables, folk sayings and quotations.

William Feather

Some of us might find happiness if we quit struggling so desperately for it.

William Feather

Women lie about their age; men lie about their income.

William Feather

I hope you enjoyed these quotes by American author William Feather. I tried to pick a few with some wit, and others that are more solemn.

Until next time…

Watch this video to learn about how fallible our memories really are and how easily others can influence us. This video is short, but fascinating. I knew most of the things they were discussing, but some of them did surprise me. In the comments, tell me what surprised you.

Until next time…

This week’s challenge: Thank someone you typically do business with consistently. Maybe a person who checks you in at your gym, a friendly grocer, or even a barista at your local coffee shop. If you really want to go all out, write a letter to their manager expressing your appreciation for their service. Additional challenge: Make the letter anonymous.

Have a great Sunday, folks!

Daily Ramblings – Spiritual Saturday – Happiness

Control, Happiness, Internal, Spiritual, spirituality, stoic, stoicism

Each of us fluctuates from being happy or sad or find ourselves in between these two opposites. I became interested in this a few years ago. I began a study of what made me happy and what made me sad. This led me to a philosophy called stoicism. A few of the famous stoics were Marcus Aurelius and Seneca. The core philosophy of stoicism is only worrying about what you control and let go of the rest. When you pursue this line of thought further, you realize that the only thing you have control over is your attitude about the circumstances or happenings in your life.

If someone does you wrong, a natural reaction is to get angry about it. This is one reaction. Another reaction could be gratitude. You could be grateful for learning about another person’s character. This knowledge can be used to avoid that person in the future, or at least to avoid expecting this person to do anything requiring trust.

There are many things outside of us that could affect our mood. The weather, what a government official says, what a person does or doesn’t do, and the list goes on and on. When you think about all the things that impact your mood, there are many. So what are you supposed to do?

The key to living a happy life is understanding that only you can decide to be happy. Happiness is within you. Happiness is an attitude that springs from your core. This doesn’t mean that you are happy all the time; it means that you are happy most of the time, with intermittent points of disappointment, anger, sadness, and all the other emotions. This requires you to look for the good in every situation. It requires that you look for the lessons that are there, just for you.

It is easy to react. Someone does something that upsets us–we get pissed off. You read a news article about some politician doing this or that, and we get pissed off. You lay some plan for an outing and it blows up and you again get pissed off or disappointed or a combination of the two.

Our emotions all spur from something outside of us in most cases. We are unhappy with our jobs, our partners, our friends, the weather, you name it. When you truly aspire to be happy, regardless of your circumstances, your life will change for the better. You learn that you are in control of your emotions, not the other way around. You are in control of how you react to outside circumstances. When you realize how much control you have, life gets a little easier.

Have a great Saturday, folks!

Until next time…

Daily Ramblings – Thankful Thursday – Grocery Stores

I’m reading a book about the 1700s and it reminded me how lucky we are to have grocery stores. People in the 1700s had to buy their own food, bake their own bread, make their own soups and stews, and a lot of other things we take for granted today.

I like grocery stores because of the variety of products available in a relatively small place. You can get fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, snacks, water, drinks, bakery goods. It is a benefit that most of us take for granted.

I typically go to the market once a week. I get everything I need. In other countries people go to their local grocer, baker, and butcher daily. I remember my days in Europe and this is the way they lived. Their apartments were small, so they had to keep their refrigerators small. This causes them to get foods daily. I miss the smell of the fresh breads in the bakeries cooking in the morning.

I also enjoy going to the market to just get out of the house. After being locked down for so much time, it’s nice to see other people and interact with them, even for a few minutes.

The next time you’re in a grocery store, take some time to think about our predecessors. It will provide you with a new found gratitude and wonder for your local grocer.

Until next time…

“When I’m sometimes asked ‘When will there be enough (women on the Supreme Court)?’ and my answer is: ‘When there are nine.’ People are shocked. But there’d been nine men, and nobody’s ever raised a question about that.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“They have never been a 13-year-old girl.” — After her male colleagues appeared indifferent about a girl’s strip-search by school administrators. – Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“We are a nation made strong by people like you.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“It helps sometimes to be a little deaf (in marriage and in) every workplace, including the good job I have now.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg

“My mother told me to be a lady. And for her, that meant be your own person, be independent.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg

“Women will have achieved true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg

“Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg

“Dissents speak to a future age. It’s not simply to say, ‘My colleagues are wrong and I would do it this way.’ But the greatest dissents do become court opinions and gradually over time their views become the dominant view. So that’s the dissenter’s hope: that they are writing not for today, but for tomorrow.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg

“This is something central to a woman’s life, to her dignity. It’s a decision that she must make for herself. And when government controls that decision for her, she’s being treated as less than a fully adult human responsible for her own choices.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg

“We are at last beginning to relegate to the history books the idea of the token woman.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg

I wanted to give Ruth Bader Ginsburg, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme court, her place on my blog. She passed this week. May she rest in peace.
