Week of May 31, 2020 challenge: Call a family member you haven’t talked with in a while and check in to make sure they are OK. Both COVID and the recent riots are probably putting a lot of folks in danger. Wish them well and ask them if they need anything.

In the comments, reply with whom you talked with and how it went.

Until next time…

In case you missed this today, here is the video of SpaceX’s launch of two American astronauts. To avoid the wait, skip to 52:34 or thereabouts to see the takeoff. I wanted to post this to my blog to record this historic moment.

Enjoy!

I believe that having a spiritual life is so important in everybody’s life.

Lou Holtz

What is spirituality? What is spiritual? It is what you decide it is. For some, it’s reading a Bible and going to church. For others it is meditating. For others, it is being in nature or spending a quiet afternoon with family.

Each of us gravitates to what we need. I enjoy reading my Bible daily, doing my spiritual exercises, working through my yearly discourses, journaling, and doing my best to live up to the things my religious path requires.

I believe that each of us chooses the life we want. We choose what we believe and ignore what we don’t. It was Henry Ford that said, “When you believe you can do a thing, or not, you’re right.” I believe this quote fits what I’m trying to say here. Whatever spiritual beliefs you hold are right.

Each of us lives our lives the way we want to (with certain limits). For me, having spirituality in my life is a wonderful thing. For others it may be a bunch of “mumbo jumbo”. This is OK. Each of us needs to follow our own path. That path is perfect for us.

Now, if you are unhappy with what you’ve chosen—change it. Go out and investigate various spiritual paths and start experimenting. If you put your effort into this, you’ll find something that aligns perfectly with what you need.

My path is exactly what I want and need. It fills gaps in my life that would be empty without spirituality. If you feel yourself feeling “empty”, this may be what you are missing. You are the only one who can make that decision.

Until next time…

Three brothers wanted to give their blind mom a birthday gift. The first got her a big beautiful house. The second got her a brand new luxury vehicle with a driver. The third got her a talking parrot to keep her company. When they all got together, they wanted to know which gift she liked best. She said they were all great but she thanked her third son because she liked the chicken dinner best.

Today, I’m grateful for you, my readers. I think about the beginnings of my blog, and how it has evolved to its present state. It’s been quite a journey. I think the best part of blogging is the freedom to write what I wish. Yeah, I try to keep categories for each day of the week, but there’s still a lot of freedom to write about the things I care about.

I really appreciate those of you who took the time to respond to my posts. I hope this continues, because it is nice to interact with people all over the world. Each day I check my stats, I’m amazed by the geographical spread of people who visit my blog. I thank each of you for stopping by when you can.

Well, that’s all I have for today, folks! I hope you and your families are doing OK in your particular part of the world.

Until next time…

Consistency, earn, Goethe, mood swings, random, rollercoaster, unpredictable

This is the highest wisdom that I own; freedom and life are earned by those alone who conquer them each day anew.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

We all ride a rollercoaster. Some days we are at the top of the hill and preparing for the dive; some days we are at the bottom of the hill and climbing to the top. The rollercoaster is a metaphor for your mind and the moods that come along with it.

Do we wake up every day, ready to conquer the world? No. We have some days like this, but the rest are either the exact opposite or somewhere in between. This is being human.

So how do you tackle this challenge, when you have no idea what dice roll you are going to get today? You drive through it. You do the work, regardless of your mood. That’s how you continue and develop habits. You drive through your moods and do the work, anyway.

I think this was the point Goethe was making with this quote. Agree? Disagree? Respond in the comments. I’d like to hear from you.

Until next time…

Today’s Ted Talk discusses Veteran Suicide. As you’ll hear, the numbers of veterans who take their lives compared to the number of veterans killed in action is staggering. I won’t ruin this, you’ll have to watch it. This is an informative and appropriate video considering the Memorial Day holiday yesterday.

If you have any veterans in your family that are having trouble, get them help, before it’s too late.

Until next time…

Decoration Day

Sleep, comrades, sleep and rest
  On this Field of the Grounded Arms,
Where foes no more molest,
  Nor sentry’s shot alarms!

Ye have slept on the ground before,
  And started to your feet
At the cannon’s sudden roar,
  Or the drum’s redoubling beat.

But in this camp of Death
  No sound your slumber breaks;
Here is no fevered breath,
  No wound that bleeds and aches.

All is repose and peace,
  Untrampled lies the sod;
The shouts of battle cease,
  It is the Truce of God!

Rest, comrades, rest and sleep!
  The thoughts of men shall be
As sentinels to keep
  Your rest from danger free.

Your silent tents of green
  We deck with fragrant flowers;
Yours has the suffering been,
  The memory shall be ours.

—Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Henry said it better than I could have. Today, we remember the fallen—those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Take a few moments and remember the brave souls, who gave their all so we could be free.

Until next time…

Dave
