Michael Jordan, Patience, Persistence, Showing up, Working Hard

Today’s Quote:

“Sometimes, things may not go your way, but the effort should be there every single night.” – Michael Jordan

This quote speaks to persistence and showing up. If you’ve ever read anything about Michael Jordan, you know he’s a hard worker. He practiced harder than anyone on the teams he played for. He demonstrated that showing up is better than giving up.

I draw inspiration from a lot of folks. One of my goals is to build a body that is muscular, lower my body fat percentage, and to be an example for other individuals over 50 years of age. It is a tough road. The body isn’t as responsive as it was when I was 20. I look at food and gain weight. I get frustrated easily, particularly when my transformation doesn’t happen overnight. Sound familiar?

We all live in a world that goes out of its way to get results now! We look for a magic pill, a bodybuilding supplement, some new technique in the gym, anything to get those instant results. The real truth: the people that look the way they do put in years of hard work, monitoring their food intake, their supplementation, and the work they were doing in the gym. They paid the price.

If anything, bodybuilding has taught me patience. Your body is the way it is because of years of bad habits. Eating junk food, drinking empty carbohydrates, sucking down soda, and consuming lots of salt, fat, and sugar.

The journey is worth it, however. I enjoy working out. I enjoy the discipline of eating within my macro allowances (proteins, carbs, and fats). Does everyday result in what I want? No. Like Michael Jordan, I am going to show up and work hard. I am not going to stop until I have achieved the body I want.

I wish each of you the best of luck on whatever your journey is.

Have a great Saturday!!

Until next time…

Dave

Insecurity, Modeling, racial oppression, racial profiling

This week’s Ted Talk:

Well, folks, I would love to say I’ve been consistent with this, but if you’ve been blogging any length of time, you realize life happens and you won’t always get that posting up that you wanted to–at least I didn’t.

This week’s Ted Talk is quite interesting. It’s short (around 9 minutes). It is given by a model who started her career when she was just a kid. I don’t want to spoil this, please watch. I would recommend this highly for any moms out there with girls who are aspiring to be models. After watching, they may change their mind…

Look for my next installment next week…

Eva Young, nice to do tasks, priority tasks, Procrastination

Today’s Quote:

“To think too long about doing a thing often becomes its undoing.” – Eva Young

If you are wondering about the common problems the human race deals with, simply look at the quotes that are out there. This is yet another quote about procrastination. You think humans have a problem with that? I know I do from time to time.

For me, procrastination typically occurs when I am faced with a task I just don’t want to do. Since I’m retired I’m finding more and more that I have the freedom to not do these things—hence no procrastination, well a lot less anyway 😊.

There are lots of articles on overcoming procrastination. If this is a problem you see in yourself, look at what is holding you back from completing something you need to do. Is it because you don’t have all the information you need? Is it because you want the stars to align? Is it because you just don’t want to do the task? If it is the latter, ask yourself “Is this really something I need to do right now?” If it isn’t, pull this from your to-do list and give yourself a break. Put it on a waiting list for later. Who knows? Maybe, later on, you’ll actually want to do this thing. For now, stop beating yourself up over a “nice to do” task and get on with the important ones.

Until next time…

Beginning, Execution, Procrastination, William Wordsworth

Today’s Quote:

“To begin, begin.” – William Wordsworth

So simple, yet so difficult.

This is what divides those that are focused from the procrastinators, the motivated from the lax, and the dreamers from those that execute. Whenever you start something new, realize you will make mistakes (It’s something new!) and just get moving. You will reach your destination much more quickly by doing, rather than by over-thinking, over-planning, or procrastinating.

Here’s to new beginnings…😊

Until next time…

Great day in the gym! My current workout was designed by Kris Gethin, called the 12-week transformation. It is really nice to have so much variety from workout to workout. As mentioned in previous postings, the variety is what continuously shocks the body and muscles you are working and forces them to adapt to the exercise you are exposing them to.

See you tomorrow…

Challenges, Difficulties, Joseph B. Wirthlin, Pragmatism, Suffering

Today’s Quote

“You can find peace amidst the storms that threaten you.” – Joseph B. Wirthlin

All of us experience difficulties from time to time. These difficulties can range from a minor nuisance to a devastating tragedy. In most cases our emotions get the better of us, complicating the situation even further.

Have you ever heard a statement that revolves around being so (whatever the emotion) that they couldn’t think? This is exactly what happens each time our emotions get the best of us.

I do not have any suggestions as to how you personally deal with these things. All I can tell you is about my personal experience. It is simple: Do the best you can with what you have and pass off your worries to God.

I’ve found that when I let go of any attachment I have to a particular outcome, along with the subsequent worry about the future when trouble comes is very calming. After trying this a few times, I also found that I suffered less. Whatever is going to happen is going to happen. The only thing you control is how you react to these difficulties.

I live by two discovered truths:

  1. Everything is in its rightful place in the worlds of God.
  2. God will never give you more than you can handle.

Until next time…

Beneficial Habits, Fear, Napoleon Hill, Perfectionism, Procrastintation

Today’s Quote:

“Don’t wait. The time will never be just right.” – Napoleon Hill

Procrastination is the killer of all goals, dreams, and plans. There are many articles online, books, and other sources that discuss the problems associated with procrastination. The two primary reasons I procrastinate are fear and perfectionism.

When I fear to have to do something, like making an unpleasant phone call or having an unpleasant conversation, I procrastinate. When I am working on a large writing project or some other important goal, I procrastinate because I want it to be perfect.

The logic behind both of these reasons is absurd when you think about it. Feeling fear about an unpleasant phone call or conversation–get it over with. Perfectionism? What is my definition of perfect and how do I know that it will be perfect for someone else? The key to doing anything or make progress is simply to do it.

Weightlifting is a hobby of mind. It is more like a lifestyle. I enjoy working out. I enjoy going to the gym. It was not always this way, however. There have been times where I would just blow off the gym for weeks on end. What I discovered when I figured out that fitness was a lifestyle choice was simply to go to the gym, regardless of what I did. You know what happened? It got easier and I actually enjoyed going. In fact, I look forward to going to the gym.

There will always be internal resistance with anything you try. There will always be some fear, some perfectionism, something that will tell you internally, “hey, why don’t we think about this a little more, or why don’t we wait one more day so we can do this at this time instead?” That internal voice will make a shift when you begin seeing the benefits of your fitness choice. I imagine the same will be true for any other beneficial habit you attempt to bring into your life.

Until next time…

Dave
